Why does my cat eat toys and shoelaces, and how can I stop this?

Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: My male cat is 8 months old. Lately he has been eating toys and shoe laces, chewing strings off clothing and eating them, chewing bristles off the broom and eating them, and then vomiting them up. Last week, he didn’t eat normally for a couple of days, then I found two pom-pom balls he’d eaten and then threw up. I am trying to figure out why he continues to do this.
