Hi, I used to have two cats; a mother and her daughter. I adopted the Mom when she was a kitten and then after she had her first and only litter we decided to keep one of them and they pretty much grew attached to each other as good friends rather than mom and kitten after the kitten was grown. They were double-trouble, stick-to-each-other-like glue pair until the Mom cat passed away of old age. After that I only have the daughter left and she's attached herself to me since her Mom's been gone. She was always pretty standoffish before other than the times she and the Mom cat would curl up under the covers in bed together in a ball next to me at night. When her mom passed away my other cat began really clingy to me and even curled up on the sofa against me on the day we said goodbye and I could feel her grief shared with me. My boyfriend won't allow me to get another cat for her to bound with so it's just Flukie and me from now on. But we'll never forget our Mamma Imzadi.
I still feel her around me in spirit and especially whenever Flukie's around. I believe she watches over me and especially Flukie whenever I have to go away on a trip or something and can't take Flukie with me.

It's a total myth that cats are "aloof" as far as I'm concerned. If you are a new cat owner you may be just finding this out. In particular, they are notorious for following their people into the bathroom - even insisting on coming into the bathroom with you. My cat does. She follows me around the house, and absolutely has to join me in the bathroom - unless I'm taking a shower, that she doesn't much care for. I do think it's a good idea to get your cat a friend, though. Cats are intelligent, inquisitive creatures and they can get quite bored, especially if they don't get to go outside. Your cat is young enough that he probably still wants to play and jump around a lot, and he could have a lot of fun with a playmate!

My bathroom gets very crowded when I'm in there, 'cuz I have the company of at least 3 cats in there with me. the fourth usually sits in the doorway, waiting for the 'youngins' to leave so he can come in and say hello. they love to lounge in the bath, and drink when I turn the water on to a slow drizzle.
Onyx sits on the back of the toilet and peers around the curtain when I shower, and there are times he joins me. His sister Freedom, like to just sit on the edge at the other end, away from the water, but curious about what I'm doing. These 2 are 10-months old, and I had them since they were 3-weeks. My other two are seniors (13 + 11) and aren't curious about the shower at all, and avoid the running water.
Oh, and about following me around; the two younger ones are usually always within a couple of feet of me, and Onyx loves to walk with me (under my feet) ... so yes, it is natural for cats to follow you around.

My Winky follows me everywhere. I'm married and she is our second cat, but she still follows me everywhere. I have had her since the day she was born, though, so maybe that's why. She's even learned to like water so she can follow me into the shower! I take a yearly trip that has me gone for about a month, so it means a lot to her to have another kitty friend and another human. She doesn't hold it against me when I get home, though - but she does keep an extra close eye on me for a while after I get back!
