Thanks for this - I was just joking around with my wife on whether we should get our cat Zoloft. He seems to be developing a minor nervous condition. Although we weren't seriously considering it, I know there are cats out there with real issues.

Thanks for recommending my book, Paws and Effect. Portion control and things with strings (not to mention tranquil feeding times) go a long way to help kitties get slim!

I got a cat from a friend this summer who had serious emotional issues. Feliway had no effect on him, and his anxiety level was through the roof. I knew that in some cases Prozac was prescribed for cats and I looked up a dosage table for cats his weight (neutered male, 20lbs and he's not a fat cat, he's just huge all around) and ordered some empty pill cases. Since everyone in my house is on Prozac, it was easy to come up with a few pills to empty and split into cat sized doses.

Within a week of starting his morning pill it was obvious that it was having a positive effect. By the end of the first month there was a marked improvement in his behavior. After a full three months it was like he was a totally new cat. I started weaning him off the drug and now he's completely off it. He's still batty as hell, but in a more normal-cat-eccentric than just crazy and scared like he was when I got him.

I know it's the same with people, some dont' respond well and others respond beautifully, but normal cat-therapies weren't doing anything for him, so we took the chance and it worked out perfectly for us.
