Is it OK to switch away from a vet-prescribed diet for FLUTD?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: When my cat was 10 months old, he was diagnosed with Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). After an expensive operation he survived the whole ordeal, and since then I have been feeding him the veterinary prescribed preventive canned food. It has been just about 1 year now since and he hasn’t had any recurrences or problems. The problem is that financially I can’t afford to buy the food anymore. It costs me about $50 each month. As a college student, this is a huge expense for me. I know the food he has been prescribed is undoubtedly the best for his health, but I just want to know…
My cats don’t play and snuggle together anymore. Should I add another cat to my household?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: I have two cats adopted from a shelter a year ago when they were kittens, and as kittens do, they used to play fight a lot and cuddle. They’re brother and sister (fixed very early on), and the staff at the shelter were so glad I took them both because as they put it, they’re ‘inseparable.’ Unfortunately, things have changed. Now they each get all of their affection from me, separately. They respect each other and seem to genuinely care about each other, but keep their distance from each other when sleeping or lounging. She recently moved with me to New York City when I got married and now lives part time in an apartment in Manhattan. I have to work in Miami two weeks a month and in NYC two weeks a month. When I am in NYC I work from home so she gets to see me and play with me whenever she wants. When I am in Miami my husband plays with her when he can and gives her lots of petting and love, but he often has to…
Where did my kitten’s voice go?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: I got my cat in January when she was 3 months old. My husband and I thought she was mute cause she wouldn’t meow. When we got her she was spayed already, which concerned me that they didn’t do the surgery the right way, or maybe she was too young. Even to this day, she still can’t meow. She opens her mouth but nothing comes out. But my other two cats understand her very well. It doesn’t stop her, OR them. She makes up for her silent meows with a lot of LOUD purring. She is the sweetest little kitten I have ever seen, and she does the cutest…
