Adopt a Special Pet, Day 4: Oscar

As we continue our celebration of Adopt-an-Awesomely-Special-Pet Week (known to some as Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week), we’d like to introduce you to Oscar, currently in the care of Save Our Strays, a rescue headquartered in Fairfield, Maine. If you’ve heard that orange male tabby cats are the most personable, friendly, and loving of all cats, Oscar offers living proof of that. (We, of course, believe black cats and stripy gray cats with white boots and mittens are the most friendly, personable and loving of all cats, but anyway — back to the cat at hand.) Oscar is a lap cat and loves to hang out with people when he’s not outside napping in…

Adopt a Special Pet, Day 3: Kimbo

As we continue our series of posts to celebrate Adopt-an-Awesomely-Special-Pet Week (known to some as Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week), let us introduce you to Kimbo, currently in the care of Save Our Strays, a rescue headquartered in Fairfield, Maine. This beautiful, loving girl is about 4 years old. She was abandoned by her previous “owners,” but that hasn’t affected her great personality. She greets her people at the door, just like a dog, when they come home from work. Kimbo would, however, prefer to live in a home without children because their fast movements can make her a bit skittish. She’s lived with other cats and will probably adapt well to a home…

Adopt a Special Pet, Day 2: Griffin

In the second of our articles for Adopt-an-Awesomely-Special-Pet Week (known to some as Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week), we’re pleased to feature Griffin, a beautiful cream-colored tabby boy with white boots and mittens and gorgeous long hair. This gorgeous guy is currently a ward of the SPCA of Hancock County in Trenton, Maine. Griffin, like most big long-haired cats we’ve known, is an affectionate and relaxed guy, and he quickly and easily adjusted to life in his foster home. He’s cautious but he doesn’t seem afraid of any other animals — he lives with three large dogs and five other cats! Griffin is trained to walk on a harness and leash, and he loves…

Adopt A Special Pet, Day 1: Jeffrey

September 19 through 25 is Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week. We, along with bloggers throughout the pet blogosphere, are dedicating this week to helping those pets who are often overlooked by potential adopters. These “less adoptable” pets are usually older, or perhaps they have a disability or a chronic illness. Maybe they’re shy because they were abused or traumatized in their earlier lives. Or maybe they’re even — *gasp* — black cats! We, of course, can’t imagine why black cats are “less adoptable,” since two of us are black cats ourselves and we firmly believe that black cats are the most gorgeous, magical, and special cats in the world. So what are we doing to help our…

Be the Change for PurrEver Ranch

We’d like to introduce you to our friends at PurrEver Ranch, a “hospice for senior kittizens and wayward pussycats.” PurrEver’s founder and sole cat caretaker, Rita Wood, opened the shelter in 2004 when she realized that although there were many shelters and rescue organizations in her area, none of them focused on homeless senior cats. She made this her mission and operates her shelter out of a ranch in Somerville, Tennessee, USA. Despite the fact that PurrEver receives no federal or state financial aid, Rita has provided a safe place for hundreds of cats that would almost certainly have been euthanized just because they were “too old” to adopt. Recently, PurrEver Ranch’s landlord died, and…

Save a life and find a lifelong, loving companion
