Where do veterinarians work, other than animal hospitals?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: Where can vets find work other than animal hospitals? ~Bailey Siouxsie: We know this isn’t the kind of question we usually answer, but we think it’s a good one. Although we can’t imagine why any vet wouldn’t want to spend his or her life treating cats, we do know that there are other very important jobs veterinarians do.
What should I do about the bleeding lump on my cat’s tail?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: My cat, Puma, has a bump about the size of a quarter, three inches from the start of his tail. It sometimes bleeds for no apparent reason. His tail oozes blood, but it does not bleed a lot. What should I do? Should I take him to the vet or should I try to decrease the bleeding? ~Andrew Siouxsie: Andrew, we definitely think this bleeding bump is something your vet should look at. Thomas: There are several things that could cause a bleeding sore, from the very treatable to the potentially fatal.
Do cats mourn for other cats?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: Recently my family lost its oldest cat, Star. Since then, my cat Lucia, who was very attached to Star, has transformed into a very lovey-dovey and cuddly cat, when she was very secretive and reserved before Star’s passing. Do cats mourn other cats and seek comfort from their humans? ~Jennifer I had three kittens, but one died and one of the survivors, Flor, has stopped doing anything. She sleeps, she doesn’t play, or even eat. Please tell me what I can do to help her. ~Uriel Siouxsie: Yes, we cats do mourn the loss of our feline companions. We also grieve when we lose human companions–and even when we…
What can I do about my cat’s ongoing urinary tract problems?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: I have a 4-year-old female cat that has been fighting a urinary tract infection for months now. The vet tested her urine and found bacteria but no crystals. She has been on several antibiotics and nothing worked and I finally gave up with them. From day one she never cried or howled in the litter box, never lost her appetite. I have been feeding her either Merrick No grain food or wellness. She has decided that she is sick of both and wants something else. I have recently changed her diet to wet food and have been adding a little water to it each time. I have also been giving her about 250mg…
My cat’s got “runways” in his fur. What can I do about this?
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: I have two cats, Sergei and Buddy, both male, both fixed. Sergei is around seven years old, Buddy is probably around two or three. A little history: I’ve had Sergei since he was around 9 months old. He was rescued from a cat hoarder’s home, lived in a shelter for several months, and then came home with me. He’s pretty much perfect – tolerant, a little grouchy, and very snuggly. He’s used to being around other animals; in fact, my former roommate’s male cat was his best friend, and he even got on fairly well with my dog. About a year after my dog died, I realized that Sergei…
My cats have started to hate each other. Help!
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: We have two male cats, a ginger and a black. The ginger one was neutered two weeks ago, and the black one is not yet neutered. The ginger cat has become extremely aggressive towards the black cat in the last couple of weeks. This has become so extreme that the black cat has taken to hiding under a cupboard and won’t come out, not to eat or to use his litter tray. He seems seriously depressed. Both cats are house cats, but since we’ve moved to a more rural location two months ago we are planning to let them out. I am considering letting the ginger cat out now so…
Help! I’ve got a needy kitten and a very jealous older cat!
Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties: I have three questions for you. The first is about my new 4-5 month-old rescue kitten. She cries to be held ALL THE TIME! We don’t mind loving her, but we can’t be expected to just hold her all the time. What should we do? Next: The same kitten has a sneeze — no other symptoms of anything, great appetite for food and water, no runny nose or eyes. Any ideas? Third, my adult cat (4 years old) is still hissing a lot at the kitten and no longer sociable unless we have her by herself with us. She won’t even come in the room with the kitten is…
