Cats in Japan: Updates and How to Help

We’ve been following the events in Japan after the tragic earthquake and tsunami that struck on Friday, March 11, and we’ve decided to break from our usual letter-answering format to give you some reports on the status of well-known Japanese cats and information on how you can help efforts to rescue animals in the disaster-stricken areas. First, some happy news about our cat friends: Maru (the famous Box Cat), Pokke, Meme, and the Momo Rescue Group are safe and sound. Although power is out in many places in Japan, including the town where Maru lives, these cats are alive and well. Goma the cat is also safe. Yesterday she reported in her blog: “I received…

A Special Note to Thomas on Your A-Day

Hi everyone. It’s “Mama” here. Siouxsie, Thomas and Dahlia have let me have the Paws and Effect podium today to honor Thomas on his adoption anniversary. Amidst all the sadness, grief and chaos in Japan following yesterday’s earthquake and tsunami, we here at the Paws and Effect Palace have a reason to celebrate. On March 12, 2004, I signed the papers officially welcoming Thomas into our home. This is a note I wrote to Thomas on the first anniversary of that auspicious day: Dear Thomas, I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since I brought you home from the shelter! Today, as we celebrate your A-Day (the anniversary of your adoption) with yummy food,…

Meet the Blind Cat Rescue Kitties: Angel and Maggie

Thank you, everyone, for your donations to the Paws and Effect Be The Change Challenge to support Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary! Today we’re going to introduce you to two more of the cats you’re helping. Angel was apparently born blind. She was saved by a small rescue in Florida, and from there she found a home. Unfortunately, her new owner was evicted from his apartment because he had seven more cats than his lease allowed — including Angel and Maggie, whose story is below. On the bright side, he did return Angel and Maggie to the rescue, and from there they came to Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary. Angel is a very sweet, quiet,…

Meet the Blind Cat Rescue Kitties: Alchemy

Alchemy is one of the cats at Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary in St. Pauls, North Carolina. He was born with micropthalmia (underdeveloped eyes) and was dumped at a shelter when he was only 8 weeks old. He was adopted by someone who kept him in a 3×3-foot cage in a filthy home for the first five months of his life. After he was rescued, he adapted well to his new life in a clean home, but at about 1 year of age, he began having recurring infections in his eyes. The rescuer’s vet removed his eyes — which weren’t working anyway –  and he recovered beautifully. But shortly after surgery, Alchemy began having seizures,…
