Collected Pieces
- The Story of Ugly. This was an anonymous Craigslist post dated 17 April 2005, which I discovered through a cat-oriented LiveJournal community. This is a sweet but sad story, and I feel it’s worth sharing. I tried to find the original author to get permission to post this story here, and could not. If you know (or are) the original writer, please let me know who you are so I can give you credit.
- What Really Happens When You Take Your Dog (or Cat) to the Shelter. This is another Craigslist post, dated July 6, 2006 and found on Best of Craigslist: Sacramento. It was allegedly written by the manager of an animal shelter. This essay is quite graphic and disturbing, but it’s a good wake-up call to people who bring an animal companion into their lives and don’t think about the long-term consequences.

I have a Siamese male cat named Percy. He is 4.5 yrs old, and was neutered at 6 mos old. He has been a challenging cat to own. Having had cats all of my life, I got Percy when I moved into my own place. I bought him from a breeder, he was a little high strung and my mother cautioned me about getting him. SHe felt his behavior was off. Throughout Percy’s life he has been very agressive. He will hiss at people and other animals for no reason. He will claw (he’s declawed on the fronts but has learned to claw with the backs now) he will nip and bite. He has broken the skin once. He hit my sister in the face with his paw leaving her with a fat lip. He is almost impossible to place into a carrier for vet visits. Once he is at the vet, he is so agressive to the staff, he has top be muzzled. I no longer take him for routine check-ups. I only take him to the vet on an as needed basis. My vet has told me to put the cat to sleep. He can be a sweet cat. He purrs, and likes to be pet. He is clean, and always uses the litter pan. I don’t know what to do with him- his behavior can switch in a second. His newest behavior (as in the past 2 weeks) is humping. He will hump a blinket and get an erection- he is neutered. He also will lick the area when he cleans himself to the piont of getting an erection. Is this normal? Should I take him to the vet for these erections? Please help, Sarah.
